Create Space On Your Hard Drive

Create Space On Your Hard Drive.

In order to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 8.1 you need to make space on your hard drive.
Windows 8.1 takes up a large proportion of your hard drive but you can shrink the partition in order to make space for Ubuntu.
It is perfectly safe to shrink the partition as it just frees up unused space but you must make sure that you don't shrink it too far as it can destroy important files.
Follow this tutorial for shrinking your Windows partition.

How To Install Ubuntu - Set Up A Wireless Connection

Set Up A Wireless Connection.

You are now given the opportunity to connect to a wireless network.
If you have a good internet connection then I recommend connecting to your wireless network as it will download updates during the installation.
To connect to a wireless connection choose the "Connect To This Network" radio button, select the network you wish to connect to and enter the security key.
If you have a poor internet connection I recommend leaving updates until after the installation. The reason for this is that if you are half way through the installation and your connection dies you will have to start again.

By installing the operating system first you will at least have a working installation. The updates can be installed as and when they have finished downloading.
Click "Continue" to move on to the next step.

How To Install Ubuntu - Preparing To Install Ubuntu

Preparing To Install Ubuntu.

A checklist will appear showing you how prepared you are for installing Ubuntu.
  • Do you have at least 7.1 gigabytes of disk space?
  • Are you connected to the internet?
  • Are you connected to a power source?
The disk space is of the utmost importance out of the three.
In the previous step I mentioned that it is probably better to not be connected if you have a poor internet connection and so whether you are connected or not isn't really a deal breaker.
Ideally you should plug in a laptop before installing Ubuntu, especially if you are connected to the internet and you are downloading updates on the fly.
There is a checkbox at the bottom of the screen asking whether you want to install third party software in order to play MP3 audio files and Flash videos.
It is up to you whether you check this box or not. If you decide not to do it now it is not a disaster because there is a simple method for doing it after the installation.
Click "Continue".

How To Install Ubuntu - Installation Type

Installation Type.

This is the part where in the other dual boot guides I used to recommend choosing the something else option and creating the partitions required to install Ubuntu.
Now though, as long as you have created a UEFI bootable Ubuntu USB drive you should see the option to install alongside Windows 8.1.
Selecting this option is perfectly valid and will not overwrite Windows, it will also put the UEFI bootloader into the correct partition.
Click "Install Now".

Make sure you have taken a backup first.
Click "Continue" to install Ubuntu otherwise click "Go Back" if you are at all unsure.

How To Install Ubuntu - Create A User

Create A User.

The last step is to create the default user to be used within Ubuntu. You will be able to create further users after Ubuntu is installed but you need one to get you going in the first place.
Enter your name and choose a name for the computer in order to identify it on the network.
Now enter a username followed by a password. You will need to repeat the password.
Click here for a guide showing how to choose a good password.
Ubuntu can be set up to login automatically or to require a password to login. Choose the option that suits your own personal preference. I would personally always require a user to login first.
There is a checkbox for choosing whether to encrypt the data within your home folder.
When you are finished setting up a user click "Continue".
